The annual European gaming convention, Gamescom, will be kicking off with Gamescom Opening Night Live 2022 on August 23 at 2 p.m. eastern. The event will be hosted by Geoff Keighley and feature 30+ games during the 2-hour run time, including the announcement of a brand-new sci-fi IP from Subnautica developer Unknown Worlds Entertainment.
Continuing a wave of recent acquisitions by the company, Embracer Group has acquired the rights to J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings. While the rights to the books will remain with the Tolkien estate, by purchasing Middle-earth Enterprises, Embracer Group has acquired the rights to use the IP in movies, video games, board games, and more.
Fortnite’s Dragon Ball Super crossover event has begun. The new event adds four new skins styled after popular Dragon Ball characters Goku, Vegeta, Bulma, and Beerus, as well as new game modes, rewards, and even an in-game Dragon Ball theme park.
Overwatch 2 is getting cross-progression on all platforms, and Blizzard launched a tool this week allowing players with accounts on multiple platforms to merge their progress into one profile ahead of the October 4th launch date. Previously, Overwatch 1 players who switched between consoles, handhelds, and PC were unable to use cosmetics earned on one platform or another.
