Blizzard Announces Selection For Overwatch World Cup

Blizzard has announced its selection criteria for their Overwatch World Cup in 2018. Countries will need to fall in the top 20 countries by average rating of their top 150 players to participate. The host countries– France, South Korea, Thailand, and the US will all receive automatic entry. Countries like Germany and Canada are near-confirmed conclusions, with a tense battle among countries like Brazil, Switzerland, Argentina, and Chinese Taipei to remain in or break into the top 20. Weapon Skins Come to PUBG

Following suit with games like CS:GO and Team Fortress 2, PUBG has introduced weapon skins as aesthetic customizations. All players get a free skin on log-in, and then will receive both free and paid weapon skin loot boxes as they play. This represents both a new level to the game’s visuals and a new avenue of monetization for the PUBG creators. While lootboxes have been a hot topic in the gaming community in recent months, loot boxes not affecting gameplay have had a mostly positive reception.

Far Cry 5 Released This Week

Far Cry 5 from Ubisoft released on Tuesday this week to mostly positive reviews, with the game praised for its story and beautiful landscapes. Far Cry 5 centers around a fictitious cult in the Montana wilderness, and the player, a deputy, is sent to arrest the charismatic leader.

Minecraft and Ms. Pac Man Up For Hall Of Fame Status

On Tuesday The Strong National Museum of Play in Rochester, NY announced the candidates for the World Video Game Hall of Fame. Twelve games have been put forward for consideration, including Minecraft, Ms. Pac Man, Metriod, Half-Life, and Dance Dance Revolution. The Hall of Fame criteria are games that are iconic, influential, international, and evergreen. Last year’s inductees included Donkey Kong, Halo: Combat Evolved, and Street Fighter 2. Final Fantasy 7, up for consideration again this year, was a finalist last year but did not make it in.
